Thirty editions and one fixed March window

The 30th TIAA Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament runs March 9 to March 14, 2027 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Big Ten published those dates on September 16, 2026 alongside its full 2026-27 conference schedule. Six game days fill the window. A fan who takes the Tuesday opener and leaves after the Sunday final holds a room for six nights, March 9 through March 15.

What each night carries

The tournament opens Tuesday, March 9 with two games between the number 15 through 18 seeds. Wednesday brings four contests. The Tuesday winners join seeds 9 through 14 in second round play that day. Seeds 5 through 8 open Thursday. The top four seeds begin Friday in the quarterfinal round. The semifinals fall on Saturday, March 13. The Big Ten crowns a champion after the Sunday title game on March 14.

CBS Sports carries the semifinals and the championship game for the 30th consecutive year. Both also stream on Paramount+.

The ask sits on the last two nights

The two sessions a fan cannot move are the Saturday semifinals and the Sunday final. Build the request around those two nights. The Tuesday arrival is the night to trade against rate.

A six-night hold ties up inventory across six separate dates. Ask for one rate across the six nights, and name a release on the early nights if the group cannot fill them.

Set the walk-away line on published rates

Engine reports an Indianapolis average of $128 a night across 1.2 million public rate observations from May 2024 to April 2026. The page labels these par rates, the cheapest publicly available price at the time of each search. The same table puts March at $122, five percent below the city figure. February runs $107. May runs $158. The observations come from searches made 10 to 180 days before check-in.

Use the March par rate as the walk-away line for the six nights. Ask the hotel for the all-in total beside the nightly rate, then compare that total against the par rate across the six dates.

The supply the walk-away stands on

Visit Indy publishes more than 9,400 hotel rooms downtown and 5,200 rooms connected to the Indiana Convention Center across 12 hotels. The connected package runs on skywalks.

The connected page lists the JW Marriott Indianapolis at 1,005 rooms, the Signia Hilton Indianapolis at 803, the Indy Marriott at 650, The Westin Indianapolis at 575, the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis at 499, Embassy Suites Indianapolis Downtown at 360, Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station at 273, the Conrad Indianapolis at 247, a combined 621 across the Courtyard, SpringHill Suites and Fairfield Inn and Suites, and Le Meridien Indianapolis at 100. The Signia Hilton carries a 2026 opening on the same page.

A second Visit Indy figure covers the wider convention campus. The meetings pages report 4,700 rooms connected by skywalk to the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium together. The 5,200 figure covers the 12 hotels the connected package names, and that is the count the walk-away uses here.

Visit Indy adds that the downtown pipeline will lift the rooms within walking distance of the convention center above 10,000.

What a buyer concedes while tipoff times stay unpublished

The Big Ten states that tipoff times and television designations will be announced at a later date. A fan booking in March holds six nights without knowing which session each night serves.

Two terms carry the risk. A cut-off date is the deadline for group members to book before the hotel releases the rooms. Attrition is the minimum number of rooms the group commits to filling. Hold the attrition figure at the number the group can fill, and ask where the cut-off date falls against the tournament dates.

Three items belong in the same conversation. Ask for the six nights as one rate. Ask what the group gives back when a night goes unfilled. Ask for the concession list in writing, since complimentary breakfast, waived fees, suite upgrades and flexible terms are the extras a group can trade against rate.

How to put the request

hotelhaggle sends one request to 50 or more hotels in the destination. Hotels accept, counter or decline. Responses typically arrive within 24 to 72 hours. Submission is free, and the rate carries no markup because the traveler pays the hotel directly.

Group rates start at 10 or more rooms per night at most hotels, and some hotels quote from five rooms depending on season and availability. A group can walk away at no charge when no offer works. Indiana is not among the four states the brand lists as restricting name-your-price bookings, so the request route runs open in Indianapolis.

The season that fixes the window

The 2026-27 conference season opens Tuesday, December 1 with four games. Eighteen conference games run between December 1 and December 13 before the schedule breaks, and play resumes Wednesday, December 30. Each member institution plays a 20-game league schedule for the ninth consecutive year, across 180 conference matchups.

Michigan arrives as the reigning conference champion after a 19-1 league record, a 16th Big Ten title and a first since 2021. The Wolverines also took the national championship with a 69-63 win over Connecticut.

Where the leverage sits

The six nights are the unit a hotel prices. The Saturday semifinal night and the Sunday final night are the two a fan cannot move. The downtown supply runs deep enough that a group can hold the March par rate as its line and walk away from any single property that will not meet it.
