Entry to the Portland National College Fair is free, and the Oregon Convention Center takes no cash. The venue lists the fair as free and open to the public, and its drive-through parking booths accept cards and touchless payment. On this trip the bed and the journey carry the spend, and the bed is the line to negotiate.
Two sessions, sixteen and a half hours apart
The fair runs Sunday 18 October from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific, then Monday 19 October from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific, in Hall D at 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. A family attending both sessions needs one night near the venue, and that night runs from a Sunday afternoon to a Monday morning.
The fair page carries a registration link and a QR code to print. One session is a day trip. Two sessions is a Sunday night.
The Sunday night is a shoulder night
The hotelhaggle negotiation guide puts shoulder nights, Sunday to Thursday, 20 to 30 percent below peak nights. Sunday 18 October falls inside that band.
The Monday session ends at 12:00 p.m. and the fair leaves Portland. A property holding an unsold room on the Sunday night has one night to sell it.
The car is the second line
The venue garage holds 800 spaces across two underground levels, with 7 feet of clearance on P1 and 9 feet on P2. Standard entry runs $15 for up to 18 hours with no in-and-out privilege, event days carry a dynamic $15 to $25 rate at entry, and overnight parking is prohibited.
A family that parks in the venue garage on Sunday and again on Monday pays $30 to $50 across the two days, and leaves the car outside overnight. The venue states that availability is first come, first served with no guarantee.
Transit costs less. TriMet charges $2.80 for an adult 2-and-a-half-hour ticket and stops charging after $5.60 in a day, so two fair days cap at $11.20. The venue sits eight miles from Portland International Airport and connects to MAX light rail, the Portland Streetcar and local bus routes.
Load the two candidates before the call: room plus overnight parking, against room plus $11.20 in fares.
The asks, in order
Make all four asks on one call, even when the first one lands.
One: the Sunday-only rate. Name the shoulder-night band the hotelhaggle guide publishes, 20 to 30 percent below the first quote.
Two: a 2:00 p.m. checkout on Monday, or a guaranteed bag hold if the desk will not move the hour. The Monday session closes at noon, and the two hours after it decide whether the family returns to the room or collects luggage from a desk.
Three: parking for one vehicle for the night. The hotelhaggle negotiation guide lists free parking among the concessions worth asking for, beside complimentary breakfast, waived resort fees, suite upgrades and flexible cancellation terms.
Four: cancellation that runs to the day of arrival. A family with a sick student on Sunday morning should not carry a non-refundable night, and a property holding an unsold Sunday room can accept the term.
The walk-away number
Write one number before opening a browser. Take the first quote and subtract 20 percent. That figure is the ceiling for the call.
Add the parking line to the ceiling. A $180 room that charges $45 for overnight parking is a $225 room, and the comparison runs against a property that quotes $210 with parking included. Compare loaded totals on a night when parking is a separate purchase.
The hotelhaggle home page states the position to hold: a guest is never required to book, pays no charge and no penalty when no hotel accepts the price, and pays the hotel directly at the agreed rate.
What one mile buys
The near cluster, measured on a straight line from 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd: Hyatt Regency Portland at 0.19 miles, Inn at the Convention Center at 0.20, Hotel Eastlund at 0.23, Motel 6 at 0.23, Quality Inn Downtown Convention Center at 0.31, Courtyard by Marriott Portland Downtown/Convention Center at 0.36, Crowne Plaza Hotel at 0.41, Shilo Inn Rose Garden at 0.42 and DoubleTree by Hilton Portland at 0.54.
Distance is the measured number in that list. The fair page and the venue page publish no room block, no group rate and no cut-off for this date, and no rate appears here because no source on this row carries one. Distance ranks the asks: a property 0.19 miles from the door can charge for parking and lose the booking to one at 0.54 that includes it.
If the Sunday night prices out
Drive in both days. Two garage entries run $30 to $50 at the event rate, and two adult transit days cap at $11.20. A family that sets the drive-in prices before the call negotiates from a measured position.
Name the price and the date, and let the properties answer. hotelhaggle lists four states where it cannot process requests: Florida, Hawaii, Iowa and Washington. Oregon is not among them, so a Portland offer runs.
